When people became aware of the pollution of plastic straws to the Marine environment, they began to look for other straws that could replace plastic straws. Paper straws were once thought to be an alternative to plastic straws, but when paper straws were actually put on the market, new problems followed.
According to the sun on April 23, McDonald’s introduced a new eco-friendly paper straw in its UK and Ireland stores in September last year to replace plastic straws, causing some consumers to boycott. The eco-friendly paper straws are known to “dissolve” in milkshakes, causing complaints among consumers. Thirty thousand people have now signed a petition asking for plastic straws back.
A twitter user wrote: ‘I use this eco-friendly paper straw purely to save turtles, but the McDonald’s paper straw is actually just a piece of paper that rolls up into a straw and thickens it!! I took two sips and the straws started sticking together.”
Others complained: ‘these new straws are horrible, they get soaked so easily and they feel weird in your mouth. Isn’t there a better alternative?’
This is a problem because paper straws tend to soften and even dissolve in the drink under a lot of conditions, and they don’t taste good in the mouth and dry out the lips.
In addition, paper straws are made from trees, which require more logging, leading to desertification, lack of oxygen supply, and lack of a sand barrier, destruction of the biosphere, and irregular changes in climate due to rising temperatures. Although reduced Marine pollution, but is another damage to nature.
So, besides paper straws, are there any other straws we can choose from?
